SANDAIRMEN THWARTED BY RAIN AT KESWICK BUT RESULTS GO IN FAVOUR...

Keswick C.C.    v    Cockermouth C.C.    N.L. & C.C.L. Division One. 02.06.01.

Cockermouth C.C. resumed normal service again this weekend by turning in a solid away performance at Fitz Park against in-form Keswick C.C.  Before being thwarted by the weather as they chased victory.

Winning the toss on a good-looking surface there really was only one thought in the mind of Captain Chambers, which was to bat first. And what a decision this proved to be for the visitors. Cockermouth started brightly and both Steve Chambers and Gareth White looked at home on the Keswick pitch. Runs were flowing readily and several bowling changes were forced upon by the positivity of the Cockermouth play. These changes brought about the downfall of Cockermouth skipper Steve Chambers who was clean bowled by Keswick C.C. Professional Majid Jahangir for 35, having put on another good opening stand with partner Gareth White. Mark Bowen entered as the first wicket fell, and immediately he and White took up where Chambers left off, scoring runs in abundance with big-hits and quick singles. White was looking especially good, and hit some lovely boundaries including a huge six over deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Lewis Cooke. Then came what Cockermouth didn't want. Rain. An early tea was taken and overs were lost, which meant that a Cockermouth decleration was going to be the only way that a 'proper' result was going to be manufactured from the game. After the tea interval, Cockermouth used up three more overs, losing one more wicket, that of Mark Bowen, caught by Swainson off the bowling of Keswick Captain Chris Greenhow. Cockermouth Professional Gareth White notched up his second League century of the season finishing up 100 not out, alongside Matthew Taylor who finished up not out also,

Cockermouth amassed 193 for 3 in their 44 overs, leaving Keswick the same amount of overs to win the game.

Cockermouth made great in-roads into the Keswick innings having Neil Swainson adjudged L.B.W. for 0 off the bowling of Mark Bowen in the first over, which was soon followed by another deluge of rain, causing the game to become rain-affected. Andrew Bryson replaced Swainson and partnered in-form Professional Majid Jahangir at the crease. The young Pakistani really put the Cockermouth attack to the sword, especially ex-Notts man Mark Bowen, who he hit for 15 off one over. Veteran spinner Ken White was the man that Skipper Chambers turned to in an attempt to dismiss the talented Jahangir. White's first delivery was beautifully dismissed for four through the covers by Jahangir but it wasn't long before the experienced campaigner had his revenge. White set out a trap of three deep leg-side fielders, and no-one in saving the one, bowling a tight middle stump line Jahangir decided to take on the deep field and was caught by a very good good catch by Matthew Taylor at long-on for 25. Stevenson then came in for the home team, but the rain came again and the game was washed out with Cockermouth confident of pushing for victory.
