05.06.01    Unchanged First XI For Derby Sowerby Cup Group Game...

Cockermouth C.C. First XI remains un-changed following the rain-affected draw with Ulverston C.C. at the week-end. Dave Capstick will be eyeing a First XI return with continuous good performances in the 'twos'. He has been taking plenty of wickets in the Second XI and only the fact that the First XI have used only three bowlers in the past two games has halted his return.

An injury to in-form Second XI batsman Jeff Dixon has prevented him being selected for the First XI this weekend.

03.06.01    Cockermouth's Title Bid Halted By The Weather... Again!!

Cockermouth C.C. were denied another certain victory due to poor weather for the second time in a fortnight at the weekend.

Having had Keswick struggling the previous week at Fitz Park, Cockermouth had Ulverston seriously struggling at Sandair this week.

Batting first Cockermouth made 193 for 4 in their 50 overs, with Professional Gareth White and Captain Steve Chambers sharing another 100+ opening partnership before Chambers went caught in the thirties. Chris Sheard went next for 4 clean bowled, before White was dubiously adjudged L.B.W. for 77. Mark Bowen blasted 38 and Taylor and Watson were the not out Cockermouth men.

In reply, Ulverston were 20 for 2 from 18 overs when rain curtailed proceedings at Sandair.

23.05.01    Cockermouth Face Tough Draws In County Cup...

Cockermouth C.C. face a tough Daniel Thwaites Meageen Cup Quarter Final trip to Tynefield Park, to take on N.L. & C.C.L. Premier Division strugglers Penrith C.C.

The draw could have been far worse for the Sandairmen, as among others Barrow, Furness and Kendal, were all left in the hat for the Quarter Final, but the trip to Penrith, who are without the services of a Club Professional for the 2001, will be a difficult task in itself for the battling Cockermouth side.

The tie will take place on Sunday June 24th, 2001, starting at 14:00.

If Cockermouth beat Penrith, then the Sandairmen will travel to either Millom or Barrow in the Semi-Final.

21.04.01    Mark's better than all rice!! According to ex-Test Star Clive...

Above: Mark Bowen in action for Nottinghamshire C.C.C.

Nottinghamshire C.C.C. Cricket Manager and South African test legend Clive Rice, has paid homage to Cockermouth C.C.'s newest recruit Mark Bowen.

Rice, who played many tests for South Africa spoke to the Times and Star newspaper about Mark saying; "Mark was an absolute model professional during his time at Notts. When you have a player of his calibre you knew that he was always going to give you his best shot when he was out on the field. He will certainly be missed in the dressing room and by all the staff here at Trent Bridge."

Cockermouth C.C. First XI Captain Steve Chambers, also spoke to the press about his new signing, saying; "Mark is a nippy seam bowler and a hard hitting batsman, and I think that he is going to enjoy himself in this league."

Last season Bowen, 33 and pictured above, was a member of Clive Rice's strong bowling contingent at Trent Bridge, but an unlucky streak of injuries influenced Mark's decision to retire at the end of the 2000 season. Prior to joining Nottinghamshire C.C.C. in 1996, Bowen played for Northamptonshire C.C.C.
